Lola the Dog

My family had a miserable Christmas this year.

It started out storybook-good.  We adopted a puppy.  She was an 8-week-old German Shepherd mix, full of energy and love.  She was sweet, curious, and had beautiful kind eyes.  We loved her.

During the adoption consultation we were informed that the dog has parasites.  The staff member said it is not a problem, all we need to do is give her her medicine.  Please note, our 3-year-old daughter was with us.  She was sitting right with us at the table.  When we expressed our concern that parasites will be transmitted to our child, the staff member told us all we have to do is wash her hands after she plays with the dog.

Another important thing to know is that Humane Society doesn't allow you much time to get to know the puppy.  We played with her for a couple of minutes and then we were asked to make a decision.  They would't allow us to place a hold on the dog and come back in 24 hours when we have a chance to think about it, consult with a vet and pediatrician about the severity of this condition.  We also know if we walk away the dog will most likely be adopted by someone else.  It felt like a high-pressure sales tactic, but we were eager to add another member to our family.

When we brought the dog home we realized that the problem was seriously downplayed.  The dog had severe diarrhea.  It was going to the bathroom every 10 minutes.  No, I am not exaggerating.  I had puppies before, so I was well aware that you need to take them out every couple of hours, but this was excessive.  We quickly realized that the dog is sicker than we were told.

We took the dog to the vet on Monday 12/26/12.  Our vet ran a number of tests and told us that the dog has a several parasites and a bacterial infection.  She also said that children 2-4 years old are 4 times as likely to contract these parasites from a dog than any other age group.  The vet said that we need to completely separate my daughter and the dog and use chlorine bleach to disinfect all the surfaces that came in contact with dog's feces.  This included our driveway, our carpet, our kitchen floor, my daughter's toys, etc.  The vet said we need to keep this regiment for 8 weeks minimum.  8 weeks!!!  I needed to keep my dog caged up for 8 weeks!!!  My daughter couldn't even pet her because of the risk of infestation.  I had to clean my driveway with bleach several times A DAY, every time after dog went to the bathroom.

After consulting with our doctor we made a heartbreaking decision to take Lola back to the Humane Society.  She was put right back for adoption.  I checked on their website, looks like she has been adopted.  I hope this will be her forever home and her new family will give her all the love she deserves.

We are still getting over the fact that Lola is not with us.  I understand we made a mistake taking a sick dog and we deserve all the guilt and sadness we go through.  However, I believe Humane Society should do a better job matching dogs with potential families.  They should never give a dog with communicable diseases to people with small children.  At the very least they should explain all the implications of taking a dog with a known medical condition to the families.  It would be fantastic if they could arrange a vet consultation for potential adopters, just so they have a clear picture of what they are getting into.

The worst part of this is that my daughter still asking about Lola.  Even though I told her that Lola is not coming back, she in waiting for her.  It kills me that this whole situation could be prevented.  We should've not taken a sick dog, period.  Humane Society could've informed us about the severity of the issue, not brush it off, tell us it's nothing, and give us a sales pitch about how wonderful a family we would make for this dog.  It is very sad that our kids have to pay for our gullibility and someone's eagerness to make things happen without considering all the consequences.

Usually I photograph kids.  Recently I got a wonderful opportunity to take holiday pictures for a couple.  I loved the shoot, had lots of fun, immensely enjoyed the process, and was very pleased with the results.  Here are some of their pictures,

I am in the process of working out the details of my Holiday Pictures package.  But,  as we all know, Santa is very busy during the holiday season.  Book your photo shoot early to ensure Santa's availability.

First

Do you remember your first?  No, not that first.  First smile, first scraped knee, first time you felt totally and completely happy?  I bet you don't, nobody does.  These precious moments happen so early in our lives, that we are too young to acknowledge them.

I was always wondering, how much of their childhood will my kids remember?  I do take a lot of pictures.  They will be able to recreate their experiences by looking at these pictures.  But will these be true memories, or just mental reflections of images they see and stories of the past that they hear?

This is the first hike of my favorite 3-year-old.  Will she remember the smell of the forest?  Giant fern leaves with water drops in them?  My hands, helping her through rough patches?

Birdbath

It's amazing how simple objects can transform ordinary into magical.  A couple of weeks ago I picked up a birdbath for my garden.   My 3-year-old decorator was with me.  She insisted we get the one with the frog and a fish (what else is new?)  As a result I have this thing happily living in my garden.  Kids love it.  And it kinda grew on me too.

New Service - Photo Book Design

6 years ago the unthinkable happened.  My hard drive died and took 2 years of my family photos with it.  2 years of my son growing up.  Gone.  That's when I started backing up my family pictures just like I do my clients'.  I also started printing them out religiously, no longer relying just on digital media.  After spending lots of time hunting down a perfect album I stumbled into photo books.

Photo books are perfect for organizing, archiving and preserving your memories.  They are beautiful, sturdy, and great for entertaining your in-laws.  No need to have a lengthy conversation about the weather this summer.  Just hand them the photo book of your last family vacation and let them enjoy.

So...

Do you have gigs and gigs of pictures that you snapped during vacations, family functions, and other memorable events?  Are they currently sitting on your hard drive collecting virtual dust?  If so, bring them to me and I'll produce beautiful, artistic, one-of-a king photo books that you and your family will be marveling at for years to come.

Every book is custom designed and printed on true photographic paper.  Album pages lay flat, meaning there is no crease, allowing for perfect display of panoramic and wide angle shots.  I have a couple of sample photo books available, if you want to take a look.

By the way, my story does have a happy ending.  After my grandparents passed away I inherited their photo albums.  Among precious pictures of my grandma in her wedding dress and my dad in military uniform there were all the pictures of my family that I sent them over the years.  Thanks to my meticulously organized grandma I got my memories back.  I guess pictures do live forever...

Colds and Cameras

Last weekend I had a cold. I didn't feel like spreading my virus to my clients and their kids, so I had to reschedule Saturday and Sunday photo shoots. So what did I do with all this free time? See for yourself!

Windup Chickens, Tears, and Frazzled Moms.

There is a number of stores that I cannot visit while I am with my daughter, all due to huge displays with toys and candy by cash registers that are low to the ground, within child's reach. Among the worst offenders are Borders and Ben Franklin Crafts and Frames. I understand it is done deliberately. Children start playing with toys while parents are waiting in line for the next available cash register. When parents refuse to buy the toy kids usually get upset, cry, refuse to leave.

Recently I visited Ben Franklin in Redmond to explore their framing shop. They have a huge small toy rack right by the cash register that was of great interest for my daughter. She refused to leave the store. I had a lot of trouble putting her in the car after carrying her out of Ben Franklin. She was so upset she didn't get a windup chicken or some other little stupid toy, she was inconsolable.

I talked to the manager named Beth. She refused to give me her last name. She felt very comfortable with the way those displays were set up. She also refused to give me the name of the person who made the decision to position those toys right by the cash register. She told me she knew they are taking advantage of people with kids, but, according to her, it was just regular merchandising. In other words, she was ok with it. My daughter's tears were ok with her.

I am sure every mother, father, caregiver, encounters this issue on a regular basis. I am also aware that these practices are not illegal. But lets talk about moral issue here. My choice is either cave in and buy the stupid toy and teach my child a wrong lesson, or force my daughter in the car listening to her cry while my heart is breaking.

I wish there was a way to regulate this kind of displays so that people with young kids can shop in peace without traumatizing their children.

New Nikon 85mm lens

Nikon came out with an AF-S version of their 85mm f/1.4 lens.  From all the reviews it looks like an awesome portrait lens.  I might need to make some space in my camera bag for it.  Business expense?  I think so!

My first post

Welcome to my blog!  This is the place to read my random thoughts, and check out my latest image experiments.

Recently I took a couple of pictures of my favorite model.  Light was simply horrible.  So....  Photoshop to the rescue.  As the result I got a bunch of interesting images.  These 2 are my favorite.
Pencil sketch - done 21st century style, with a digital camera
Very moody photo.  It has a bittersweet feel to it...
